NEW! Dort Knows Best Exclusive Excerpt
The 3rd series in the beloved Aura Cove Universe is UNDERWAY! Met Dort, she’s hilarious, cranky, and loves getting under the skin of her Golden Cove neighborhood nemesis, Margaret O’Malley, a.k.a Magpie.
Golden Cove is just like The Villages—but with magic!
“You’re incorrigible.”
“I know. It’s why you love me.” Dort smirked.
“One of the many reasons.”
Ray reached past her and turned the gas burner down two notches. She stirred the pot and the cumin scent in the air intensified.
“I have another.” She set the spoon on the rest, eyes sparkling with mischief. “I may have made an appointment for some fine, upstanding young men to pay Magpie a home visit.”
Ray closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose, afraid of where this was going already.
Dort was practically vibrating with giddiness as she continued. “Fine, upstanding young men from the Church of Latter Day Saints.”
The kitchen was quiet for exactly three seconds. Then Ray made the sound she adored, a full, belly laugh burst out from deep in his core. He set his iced tea on the counter before he spilled it, knowing she was just getting started.
“I told them,” Dort continued, straightening her dish towel on the handle of the oven, “that I was a lonely widow with vast resources who’d never had any children of her own and I was exploring my spiritual options as part of my estate planning process. They were very enthusiastic. Lovely young men.”
“You didn’t.” Ray wiped his eyes.
“Oh, I did.” she confirmed with sing song glee, giving the pot two more jaunty stirs.
Ray shook his head, still smiling, in the way that meant he didn’t condone her antics, but loved her spirit anyway. “Aren’t you being a little petty, corazón?“
She turned to face him then. Wooden spoon in hand. Completely straight-faced.
“Whenever I think I might be getting too petty, I just ask myself: What would 50Cent do?” She stroked her chin with her thumb and forefinger like she was deep in thought. “I feel like Fifty would agree this was a great first step, but ultimately would encourage me to try harder.”
New in Favorite Reads : Kindred
I went into Kindred completely blind (so much so that when I got halfway through and realized Dana kept returning to the 1970s, I Googled and discovered the book was written in the 1970s!) Nearly 50 years later, it still feels remarkably modern and relevant. Octavia Butler tells a compelling time-travel story while painting a brutal picture of slavery, racism, sexism, and white supremacy. It also made me think about how little we understand the generational trauma of slavery and how much of what divides us today may come from generations who have not acknowledged it. The body keeps score, I truly believe this, and if you’re skeptical, this novel will prove it to you.
Kindred is fascinating and heartbreaking. Dana isn’t simply witnessing history, she is forced to participate in it, making the horrors of slavery impossible to view as distant or abstract. You will feel it through her.
