My next heroine is named Dort Castillo. “Dort” was inspired by my mother-in-law, whom I never had the chance to meet. Her name was Dorothy, though she went by Dort, a nickname that intrigued me from the moment I first heard it. “Castillo” reflects her marriage to a wonderful Hispanic man, while also nodding to my longtime fondness for Cruz Castillo from Santa Barbara, the soap opera I was hopelessly hooked on in the ’80s.
